Skinny Puppy—Mythmaker

Skinny Puppy-Mythmaker

Someone once made the remark to me that Ogre and cEvin Keys both made their best music in their solo projects. Until now I had fully agreed with that statement. Skinny Puppy’s new album Mythmaker is exactly what fans of the industrial metal genre have been waiting for. Mythmaker is by far the best Skinny Puppy album that I have heard, and so far my favorite. It represents an evolution of sound from their older (pre-hiatus) albums. I hate to make the comparison because it doesn’t do Mythmaker justice, but it comes off as a flawless step forward from the OhGr albums. Gone are the long drawn out blips, bleeps and scratches that had really turned me off of Skinny Puppy’s earlier sound. I’m not going to say Mythmaker is devoid of that sound, rather the distortions have been tightened up, and layered (and layered and layered…) together to create a steady beat. Combine this with Ogre’s twisted lyrics put down in a mish mash of effects, and you’ve got one tight album. Mythmaker is by far Skinny Puppy’s most accessible album to date, and dare I say that it may also be their most danceable too.
