Static X—Cannibal
Cannibal, the latest disc by Static X, grabs you by the berries and thrashes you all the way through to the last beat. Wayne and the gang set the president right off the bat with their title track, Cannibal. Opening with a quick screamed verse, and a pause, this track lays out what you can expect from the entire album.
Cannibal is exactly what fans have grown to expect from Static X. Pounding metal melded with a smattering of electronica/industrial elements. “Evil Disco” is the name of the game and Static X play it well. While these songs are not lyrical masterpieces Wayne’s vocal range is enough to start a riot. Throaty growls, screaming, and occasionally singing, his voice is perfectly matched with shredding guitars, deep baselines and the pumping machine that is Nick Oshiro’s drums.
A few of my favorite tracks include… well, shoot they’re all my favorite. I will say that what I like most about this album is the way that the electronica elements are fused naturally into the tracks. Often as the calmer intro to an otherwise heart-pounding rhythm, such as in No Submission, or a run off of a heavy riff in the middle of a track.
I also noticed quite a few more guitar shredding solos in this album. These pop up in at least half the tracks on Cannibal. I’m not quite sure how I feel about them since I have never really been a big fan of power metal, but I’d like to think of them as an ode to the late great Dimebag Darrell.
Overall, I’d say that this is the best Static X album to date. I had a great time spinning it nonstop for a week straight. In addition, Static X should win some kind of an award for the hilarious video to Destroyer. Roller derbies and metal go together like peas and carrots. Maybe I’ve got some strange fascination with the roller derby phenomenon sweeping the nation. If so, I’m not the only one.
