Uhm, I Went to Daddy
Wow, I just watched the video for Aphex Twin’s Come to Daddy. This is also the first time I heard the original version of the song. I heard the cover that Mike Patton and Dillinger Escape plan did a while back, but never seemed to get around to hearing the original until now. As sacrilegious as this sound, it’s a bit of a toss up as to which one I like better. I think I’m just at a time and a place in my life that I’ve heard some pretty exotic music and now that I’m finally getting around to listening to more Aphex Twin it just doesn’t have the same effect on me as it would had I heard it 5-10 years ago. Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate that it is phenomenal music, especially given the scene in which it was originally released. Sometimes certain music will just flick a switch in your head and shift your perspective a little to the left, I’ve had that happen many of times myself, and I can see how this would’ve done the same to other people. I just didn’t see the fireworks or anything like that. I know, I suck.
I think the only music that done it for me lately is the five track self-titled disc from Error featuring Greg Puciato of DEP on vocals. It’s a couple years old, but if you haven’t heard it and you like either punk, metal, or hard hitting electronic music you’ll want to give it a listen.
Of course all of this introspection came about because Entertainment Weekly published Michel Gondry Picks 25 Classic Music Videos. For which I have many in common, Sledgehammer really messed me up as a little kid. Thanks to Jason for shedding light on this gem of an article. Now, enough blathering and more videos.
While not entirely an Aphex Twin video per-say, I think Rubber Johnny was better:
You suck.
Seriously though, you’re probably right about the 5-10 years ago comment. When I listened to Aphex Twin years ago, it was completely mind blowing. Richard is a big reason why I continue to pursue electronic music. I’m still trying to figure out some of his tricks. “Come to Daddy” is still one of my least favorite tracks by him. It was originally a response to death metal by Richard and it just happened to hook. Glad you posted the Rubber Johnny video. That’s Chris Cunningham direction (think Bjork’s “All is Full of Love” video). Although, in the RJ video, only part of the original song was used.
Not to get too far off topic, I’m glad that you’re exposing yourself to more Aphex Twin. IMHO, his music is pivotal in modern electronic music.
Recommendation: “54 Cymru Beats” on the “Drukqs” album.

I downloaded Drukqs the other week, and 54 Cymru Beats is great, I just need to find an appropriate time to crank it up and really give it a good listen.
As far as Bjork’s video, that one is great. I love that song, it was Ivy and mine’s song at our wedding—very romantic. The fact that the video is lesbian robots getting it on blew my mind when I saw it.
