Uhm, I Went to Daddy

Wow, I just watched the video for Aphex Twin’s Come to Daddy. This is also the first time I heard the original version of the song. I heard the cover that Mike Patton and Dillinger Escape plan did a while back, but never seemed to get around to hearing the original until now. As sacrilegious as this sound, it’s a bit of a toss up as to which one I like better. I think I’m just at a time and a place in my life that I’ve heard some pretty exotic music and now that I’m finally getting around to listening to more Aphex Twin it just doesn’t have the same effect on me as it would had I heard it 5-10 years ago. Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate that it is phenomenal music, especially given the scene in which it was originally released. Sometimes certain music will just flick a switch in your head and shift your perspective a little to the left, I’ve had that happen many of times myself, and I can see how this would’ve done the same to other people. I just didn’t see the fireworks or anything like that. I know, I suck.

I think the only music that done it for me lately is the five track self-titled disc from Error featuring Greg Puciato of DEP on vocals. It’s a couple years old, but if you haven’t heard it and you like either punk, metal, or hard hitting electronic music you’ll want to give it a listen.

Of course all of this introspection came about because Entertainment Weekly published Michel Gondry Picks 25 Classic Music Videos. For which I have many in common, Sledgehammer really messed me up as a little kid. Thanks to Jason for shedding light on this gem of an article. Now, enough blathering and more videos.

While not entirely an Aphex Twin video per-say, I think Rubber Johnny was better:
