Simply put, Al Gore is challenging the U.S. to cut it’s dependence on carbon based fuels by 100% within 10 years. He likens this to JFK’s space race challenge, which—being the hyper competitive country that America is—we rolled up and smoked in eight years. I would also like people to take note that in this speech Gore doesn’t say that we should cut our dependance on foreign oil like so many other politicos do. Gore urges us to cut our dependence on ALL carbon based fuels, which includes not only oil, but also ethanol, coal, and natural gas. This isn’t an issue of stopping the terrorist in the middle east, this is an effort to stop us from terrorizing the planet that we live on and the creatures that we share it with.
