Eris Wants You…

To join the Apple Corps. Not that contrived legion of Beatles fans. I’m talking about the army of slackers and misfits that loyally serve the one true god(dess), Eris, mother of chaos and disorder. In all seriousness, I happened to come across this track in my iTunes list today and felt compelled to share it with you.

The short story behind this is that I created a digital primer for Discordia as a project for my multimedia class at BU. I wanted to incorporate some audio into the piece, so I called upon my brother in-law, Scott—a.k.a. PanTastic— for help. Scott whipped up this little ditty using his symphonic wizardry. And the rest is history.

Enjoy!

Worst Movie of 2008

10,000 B.C. is hands down the winner of this prestigious award. This is one of the lamest big studio—Warner Bros.—film that I’ve seen in a long while. The story was weak as hell—the pyramids where built by primitives who’d been enslaved by someone they thought was a god, but who is really a crusty old white guy. The rest of the plot-line is just as golden. The visuals were at least 10 years outdated—the sound stage and matte paintings were blatantly obvious. The 3D beasts were from a PBS special at best. All in all, B.C. was a movie that would’ve been great in the 80’s but is was a very poor showing by a major studio by today’s standards. The only real good thing about the movie was the trailer, which tricked me into wanting to see the whole movie… bad trailer, bad bad trailer.

I am a little slow

I mentioned before that The Faint have an album coming out on thier new label blank.wav. Well, the new album must’ve been announced while I was in some work induced coma, because I missed the boat. Regardless, the album is called Fasciinatiion and it’s dropping on August 5th. The neat-o sites for the label and the album were both created by the design rock stars over at Secret Penguin. They birds were even kind enough to provide a nifty little player so all the cool kids can listen to the first single off of the album The Geeks Were Right. Enjoy!

***EDIT***
I just noticed that the little player looked real bad in firefox, so I took it down. If the boys at Secret Penguin want to fix that somehow, I’ll repost it. Until then go to afore mentioned The Faint website and listen to it.

Photo Phun

For some reason I’ve been feeling the urge to bust out my Canon SLR lately. Not the digital kind, but the “old school” kind that you have to put actual film in and then take it out to be developed if you don’t have a dark room in your basement—I have a creepy/musty room, but that’s hardly the same. Since I have yet to dig my camera out of my closet I have been sating my lust for pretty pictures on the net.

These first two are sort of related thematically, and are at least to me a little quirky with a touch of everyday sadness.
Dulce Pinzon's Superheroes
Dulce Pinzón’s series Superheroes depicts Mexican immagrants of NYC performing their heroically menial work dressed up as superheroes.

The Mexican immigrant worker in New York is a perfect example of the hero who has gone unnoticed. It is common for a Mexican worker in New York to work extraordinary hours in extreme conditions for very low wages which are saved at great cost and sacrifice and sent to families and communities in Mexico who rely on them to survive.

Thou Shalt Not Make Crappy Websites

Take a gander at the 10 Commandments of Web Design. How many of you are breaking number four right as we speak—4. Thou shalt not overuse glassy reflections.?

New & Views

Just a couple of quick bits.

  • Alice Cooper and Noel Fielding of The Mighty Boosh may be teaming up to write an “acid rock gothic musical.” This sounds like a winner to me.VIA NME
  • Stereogum has an early review of Beck’s new album, Modern Guilt, and the verdict is pretty good. According to the review—and my own experience—the album is less funky fresh and a little more mournful than some casual fans would expect from Beck. Variety is the spice of life, and Modern Guilt is definitely worth a listen.

Dark Horse Brings the Hammer

Captain Hammer
Dark Horse Comics has a short comic on their Dark Horse Presents myspace page that introduces us to Captain Hammer, Dr. Horrible’s arch nemesis. This is all a tie in to the new Joss Whedon web series Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog starring Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible and Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer.

They released a little teaser too (via):

Shilo Presents Vol. 3

Shilo Presents: Volume 3
The Shilo gang has brought it again with their latest dj mix, Shil Presents: We Make It Good, Volume 3. This volume features the artful spinning of London’s Graeme Sinden. I’m listening to it as I type, and it’s a nice upbeat mix so far. Good for beating back the hump day hum-drums.
