And the Winner of Lamest Video of the Year Goes to…

Never Wanted to Dance by Mindless Self Indulgence!

I know I should quit ragging on them eventually, but I haven’t slept a full night in about two weeks so I’m feeling even more critical than usual. So why not let it shine, right? Anyway, this is the new video from MSI’s, latest and least greatest album, If, and it is disappointing in pretty much the same manner in which the whole album was disappoointing. Give it a looksie before reading the rest of the post if you’d like.

The main thing that buggers me here is that the tempo of the visuals, it doesn’t match the tempo of the actual music. It has this half-speed feel that is distracting. I could handle double-time since it is a pretty fast paced song, but more than anything I feel bored when I watch this video.

The second thing—and really that’s about it—is the entire plot of the video. I for one love music videos that actually try to tell a story rather than just watching the band stand there in a dirty alley/on a rooftop/in a field/etc. wanking their instruments whilst looking ever so cool. That said, I wonder who MSI is trying to appeal to? Does anyone actually play DDR anymore? Don’t get me wrong, the in-game shots looks neat, but to roll out the “subculture dance-off” is weak. I’ve seen this done many times before, and nobody did it better than Skinny Puppy.

Don’t you wish all disagreements could be settled with a dance off? ;)
