Some Voting Music Maestro

A classic from back in my day, The Presidents of the USA’s Peaches. While not blatantly political, it does have ninjas.

For those of you that are still on the fence about who to vote for, let Ministry’s No ‘W’ remind you what “4 More Years of Bush” will sound like.

Are Titles Really Necessary?

Here’s a couple things to help liven up your Thursday.

  • First off is a track from Marnie Stern, she plays some pretty catchy mathcore rock. It’s fun, uptempo music to start your night off right.
  • It never fails to amaze me that people can get even creepier than they already are. Here is an interview that Matt Lauer did with women who collect “Unliving Dolls” which are eerily lifelike/lifesize baby dolls that cost upwards of $4,000. The saddest bit is that some of these women treat the dolls like real children.

  • For a good chuckle check out the Passive Aggressive Photostream on Flickr. You might even learn a new word.
  • The rumor mill has it that NetFlix might allow streaming to Macs by year’s end. This is good news for people who don’t want to run Parallels/Windows just to watch movies on their Mac. For those who don’t want to hold their breath on a rumor, you can already watch a smattering of flicks on Hulu.com, or if you are a NetFlix member with an Xbox 360 you could just wait until November when their Fall Update hits the street. If this rumor turns out to be true, my question is how will this effect Apples iTunes video service?

Remember to watch the Vice Presidential Debates tonight. They start at 8pm Central Time, and are airing on pretty much all of the major networks.

Creature Feature

It’s about that time of year again when ghosts and ghouls break free from their fetid slumber to haunt the dark misty streets. It’s also the time of year I dig out my “Halloween” music, you know the usual: The Misfits, White Zombie/Rob Zombie, some Cradle of Filth just for starters. It’s also the time of year I start looking for some new monster-rock to add to my collection. Last year for instance I found Lordi, and before that Stolen Babies both excellent band in their own right.

It looks as if this year’s search will be no less fruitful. I’ve already discovered one such new(ish) band, Creature Feature. While their latest album The Greatest Show Unearthed was released last year on October 30, it’s still new to me. Creature Feature is a horror-rock duo consisting of vocalist Curtis RX and organist Erik X. They have a classic spook-rock sound, that’s heavy on maniacal funhouse organ grinding and distorted guitars. The most immediate comparison that I can draw is that they are a bit like a mash-up of Idiot Flesh and Tim Burton’s A Nightmare Before Christmas with quirky uptempo songs with fiendish subject matter. My affinity for zombies has naturally drawn me to Aim For The Head, the second track on their album. Anyone who’s seen a George Romero film knows exactly what their talking about here.

Start Your Friday Off Right

What’s the best part of a renaissance fair? Why it’s midgets in jester hats and men in tights. Happy Friday!

Battles: Atlas

Lately it seems like I’ve been hearing Atlas on KRNU almost every time I get into my car. It’s such a great tune that I feel compelled to share it with you and you and even you. Actually the entire album is pretty great, so if you don’t have it already you might want to check it out. I can attest that whenever I’m in a particularly jaggedy mood, I pop on some Battles and it cheers me right up. I won’t go so far as to say that Battles has mystical healing properties, but more than a few people are alive and well today because of these tunes.

New Crystal Castles Video

Just a quick weekend fix. 8-bit mashers Crystal Castles has released a zombified video for their remix of HEALTH’s Crimewave.

Nine Inch Nails Showing Us Some Love, Sort Of

Nine Inch Nails added some dates to their Lights in the Sky tour last week. When I saw this I did a cursory search for any Nebraska dates, naturally there weren’t any so I went about day. I completely missed that they scheduled a show over in Omaha’s backyard, Council Bluffs. The show will be at the Mid-America Center on Wednesday, November 26—the day before Thanksgiving. It doesn’t look like there’s any ticket information available at this time, but tickets for their other midwestern dates run in the $30-$60 range so I would assume this show is about the same.

Fundamental Differences in a Band’s Name

Here’s a little something that everyone should keep in mind while you sift through your music. Deerhunter is not the same as Deerhoof. Deerhunter is an indie rock band that sounds like any other sad-bastard post-emo band out there, but has somehow become wildly popular with the skinny jeans crowd. Deerhoof, on the other hand is quirky trio, that sound a bit strange in a poppy sort of way, and features a female vocalist—Satomi Matsuzaki. Deerhoof is also playing at The Slowdown on Monday October 13.

Now, that’s one to grow on.
